Rod Harris I am indeed very proud and honoured to have been elected as your President of the RAF Seletar Association at the Annual General Meeting in Coventry. I look forward to being able to represent the association by fulfilling that supreme position with enthusiasm and energy over the next twelve months. I would like to be an active President by being closely involved with your Chairman and Committee. Also I would like to attend Local Regional Meetings and reunions, so please let me know of any future plans. I realise that am a fairly new member only joining the Association in 2000, and appreciate that I may not be know to many members. So here is a brief appraisal of my service career. On 13th October 1948 at RAF Cardington I handed over my civilian identity card, ration book, took an oath of allegiance to King George V1 and became AC2 Harris R J number 4033335. (It is certainly an amazing coincidence that the ‘last three’ is my membership number of this Association). Following trade training as a medical attendant I was specially selected for a two year tour of duty in Aden in 1950. On return to UK I trained as a Hygienist for twelve months and off to Malta in 1954 for two and half years. This was followed by a three year stint as instructor at Medical Training Establishment located at RAF Freckleton (known as 13 Site RAF Warton). I was posted to RAF Seletar in the rank of Senior Technician in August 1960. My appointment was SNCO i/c Anti Malaria and Hygiene Unit in charge of up to 100 local enlisted nationals with JNCO support. Apart from mosquito control in the Sungei Ponggol and Seletar areas, other work involved pest control (including snakes), waste disposal, and monsoon drain clearance. As a Hygienist, I was involved with environmental health, water supplies, living and working conditions, and industrial hygiene throughout the East and West camps. Also undertook regular inspection of cafes, bars and shops in Jalan Kayu, Seletar Hills and Serangoon, used by HM Forces and families. I spent almost a year away from Seletar being often attached to HQ 224 Group travelling extensively to Thailand, Cambodia, Malaya, Borneo and Brunei. I returned to UK in April 1963, and fifteen months later was posted to Aden for two years. In December 1966 I was commissioned as an Environmental Health Officer in the Medical Technician Branch, serving at Strike Command, Support Command and managed a tour as OC Joint Services Health Unit HQ NEAF based at RAF Akrotiri, Cyprus from 1969 to 1972. I retired in 1985 from RAF Brampton. I have resided with my wife, Jenni, in the area for almost thirty years where our three children grew up and educated at the local schools. Always interested in football as a player, manager and referee, I was Chairman of the RAF and Combined Services Football Association during the latter years of my service career. I am a Life Vice-President of the RAF Football Association. Although I am actively self-employed in the private sector as a food safety training consultant, I shall find time and opportunity to carry out the duties expected of me as your President. Thank you.
